The world is split into two groups.
Those who will never thrust open the pages of a book, even if the world is burning around them and the instructions for quenching the inferno can be found in-between le pages.
And then their counterparts, who cannot be pried away from the depths of the written word, even if the world is burning around them and a fire extinguisher sits in their lap (to clarify, the individual from scenario #1 did not have said extinguisher handy).
Ok, so maybe there is a bit of exaggeration and generalization here (but just a wee bit), but in all truthfulness, when it comes to taking in knowledge and learning, most of us have a preference for how we best digest new information. There are those who can have a complete learning experience by viewing examples (or through watching videos), others learn best via auditory means, and some (myself included) prefer to read a book or article to gain the desired info.
Folks, this is one of those rare moments in life where there isn’t a “right” answer. The Lord has created each of us with unique ways to learn and grow, and while it is our responsibility to allow ourselves to learn even when the method at-hand might not necessarily align with our “style” (more on this at a later time), there is nothing inherently wrong with gravitating towards the methods of learning that make the most sense to our brain.
For some, learning might be wandering the pages of books or voyaging through blog posts. For others, exploring videos or tuning-in to podcasts might be more beneficial. And while simple trial and error may occasionally result in acceptable stories, we neglect a wide swath of tools and resources, not to mention fuel for story ideas and characters, when we neglect learning, especially if our neglect is because the delivery method doesn’t fit our normal mode of learning. There are a myriad of ways for storytellers to learn, but regardless of the style or method, the best storytellers are active learners, and it behooves us to do likewise and stretch ourselves to learn in different ways (even though books will always be the best #notbiased).
Speaking of stretching….writing has been my passion for many years, and the idea of starting video and podcasting series has always been frightening. However, the Lord’s ways are (much) higher than my own, and He has recently guided me towards creating content in both the video and audio realms.
Which brings us to…..the Seeking Stories Podcast and the Seeking Stories YouTube channel!
My ultimate hope with Seeking Stories has always been that the Lord would use the content therein to encourage and train storytellers (new and experienced!) to create bold, inspiring, audacious stories with excellence. For those who love learning auditorily (making up words is clearly a favorite pastime), my hope is that the Seeking Stories videos and podcast episodes are as meaningful to you as the written word is for blog-post lovers. And for those who tend to read exclusively, I hope you’ll give listening to podcasts a try. If you’re like me, you’ll find that us readers often ignore a wonderful world of ideas that this delightful medium has to offer.
Regardless, I hope you’re encouraged to continue telling epic stories for the Kingdom!
